The spine represents both a vital central acis for the musculoskeletal system and a flexible protective shell surrounding the most important neural pathway in the body, the spinal cord. Spinal disease is common and causes a huge burden of morbidity and cost to society. Examples include degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, fracture, ligamentous injury, infection, tumour, and spondyloarthropathy. Treatment varies with the disease entity and the clinical scenario can be nonspecific. As a result, imagin is often required to help make the diagnosis. Frequently obtained studies include plain radiographs, DXA, bone scans, CT and MR. Computation methods play a steadily increasing role in improving speed, confidence, and accuracy in reaching a final diagnosis. For this special issue, we invite authors to submit original research papers or high- quality review articles on a wide range of topics including, but not limited to:

  • Clinical applications of spine imaging
  • Computer Aided Diagnosis of spine conditions
  • Emerging computational imaging techniques for spinal diseases
  • Fast 3D reconstruction of spine
  • Feature extraction, multiscale analysis, pattern recognition
  • Image enhancement of spine imaging
  • Image-guided spine intervention and treatment
  • Multimodal Image registration and fusion for spine imaging

Spine is one of the utmost important multifunctional structures in the human body. It provides physical support with great flexibility to the upper body. It governs the instantaneous reflex action and conveys neural signals transmitting between the brain and the majority of the body. Due to the wide diversity of functions that the spine serves, spine disorders trigger various and severe problems which considerably reduce patients¡¦ living quality, and cause a huge burden of morbidity and financial cost to society. Spine imaging is increasingly important in diagnosis, detection, prognosis, intervention, therapy, and treatment of spine related diseases or conditions. Current modalities used on spine include all existing and emerging imaging (e.g. hybrid imaging) modalities. This field starts to attract numerous applications in a wide spectrum, from image acquisition and image analysis to image guided intervention. This special issue is intended to highlight the state-of-the-art, emerging challenges, and innovative approaches in spine imaging, image analysis, and image guided intervention. Suggested topics include but are not limited to:

  • Hybrid spine imaging
  • Statistical, biomechanical and shape modeling of spine
  • Spine segmentation and registration
  • Multi-modality spine image analysis and visualization
  • Computer-aided spine pathology/detection/classification/quantification/prognosis
  • Image guided spine intervention
  • Clinical application of spine image computing
